How to track changes in page load speed parameters for free?
While there are quite a few tools out there to help you measure basic website vitals - from Chrome extensions to web apps - they run manually and only measure basic vitals for one site at a time.
If you want to automatically measure basic web metrics for multiple sites, such as you and your competitors, use this Google spreadsheet.
Not only will it help you measure metrics for multiple URLs, but it will also help you visualize the change in metrics using sparclines.
How to customize the table for your projects
- Make a copy of the Web Vitals table in your Google Drive.
- Click the first tab and enter a list of URLs that you want to measure and track. Also specify unique sheet names for each URL, and the metrics for that URL will be saved on the corresponding sheet.
- Click the "Track Web Vitals" button, authorize the sheet, and you're done.
The button will set up a daily cron job, a program that runs scheduled tasks. It will automatically connect to the Google PageSpeed API, extract the main vital signs for each specified URL and record them in the corresponding sheet.
The source code of the application script is available on Github. You can reuse, modify and publish the code according to your own requirements.
These metrics are measured for the desktop and mobile version of the site:
- First Contentful Paint
- First Input Delay
- Largest Contentful Paint
- Cumulative Layout Shift
- Speed Index
- Time to Interactive
- Estimated Input Latency
